The first layer is really the support, which deals with what you actually apply paint on. But for conversation's sake let's make this the first step. This is a graphite rendering of what we want.
Various artists will mention that this is a very important step- the drawing. I used here a graphite stick to fill in large areas. Remember, in the end this is all going to be under paint.

sfigure step 2

After the graphite rendering, I'm trying to give a good idea of what is dark and what is light. I was aiming for high contrast, obviously. This is done in acrylic paint. It's perfectly fine to work oils on top of acrylic- just not the other way around.

This is another acrylic layer over step 2. Tafter this, I will be able to start working with oil paint.
This step is a wash over the entire piece.
I set aside a cup, for example, and mix in a dark brown such as umber, some black, and most important- for me- some acrylic gloss medium, which is transparent. The gloss medium will end up making the thing look like glass. It has a very smooth and slippery surface, and it's a delight to put oils on top of that.
